Everything I read about them at the time said otherwise. A large portion of owner reviews were “Yeah, it has a 10 year warranty, but you’re going to be using it.”

Really? I knew somebody who had an ‘03 or something since new and it was never in the shop for anything but regular maintenance.

The Sorento has too, really sharp looking trucklets. Even the Honda Pilot has improved massively.

I actually like the way the current Malibu looks, especially from the back, but the face on both it and the new one is ugly as fuck.

And as it improved from generation to generation, the rear visibility got noticeably worse. Seriously, the current Santa Fe Sport has the worst visibility I’ve seen in its class. We’re talking not being able to see anything past the rear door until you look out the very back window.

The Santa Fe XL on the other hand, has great visibility.

The 1st generation Santa Fe (2000-2006) dates from the same era as the 3rd gen Elantra, 2000-2006. (photo of 2004-2006, post face lift)

After that, it seems to me like the Hyundai design team went down a dead-end road with the “Coke Bottle” styled bodies.

You see this in both the 2nd gen Santa Fe (2006-2012) and 4th gen Elantra:

I’ve seen other manufacturers do the same thing; these weird design detours that don’t connect the previous and subsequent generations.

Look at the 5th gen Elantra - looks more like the 3rd gen than the 4th:

I liked the first generation Santa Fe. Like I said in my reply above, it dates from the same era as the 3rd gen Elantras and has a nice combination of smooth contours and sharp style lines.

The next gen was too organic with not enough hard edges.
